Char Dham - The inner journey.

A 12 day journey that gave me as much inner peace as it exhausted my physical body.

The sheer beauty, the calm of the mountainous landscape, its varied people and the culture it encompasses force you to stop being a tourist and embrace it all as your own.

The silent calling of Kedarnath is louder than the hum of the diesel buses on the winding roads or the torrential rains that wipe out the road beneath at the blink of an eye or the rush of the horses and mules trudging up creating a hazard for the pilgrims (यात्री) on foot.

The meditative Badrinath automatically invokes the Vishnu Sahasranam (विष्णुसहस्रनाम) from within you and losing track of the queue you are lo and behold in front of Him!

The hot springs at Yamunotri welcome your tired body with a spa that one can only look at as crowded or peaceful depending on your viewpoint.

The white Gangotri temple beckons you to wade into the babbling stream yonder and sit on the rounded pebbles to listen to what She (Ganga Mayya) has to whisper to you alone.

Our Char Dham experience was a really humbling journey which reminds one to introspect at each step of the way.

Shrirang, my husband and me (Vidyut) joined an interesting group, tour captained by Mrunal Joshi of GoAround Travels. It was very unlike the standard "pilgrimage" feel that one gets when we talk of Char Dham. We enjoyed both the spiritual bliss and the comfort and pampering of a vacation.

Dehradun is the closest and probably the most convenient airport to begin the Char Dham Yatra. The highway from Delhi is good too, so, the drive from Delhi to Dehradun is quite pleasant. One can very well take a flight to New Delhi and then drive to Dehradun. Our Day 1 began with a comfortable stay at Missouri. The heritage hotel Ilbert Manor, we stayed at overlooked the Nanda Devi hills and was built almost 185 years ago. Early mornings welcomed the merry chirping of a multitude of birds and we had an unlikely visitor for tea....a monkey.

Notes: Ilbert Manor is a very comfortable and beautiful Victorian Bungalow in Mussoorie. Although little difficult to reach this place is worth staying. Weather in Mussoorie was perfect - 18 deg C temperature - not too warm and not too cold.

After a lazy breakfast, we rode to Kempty falls in Mussoorie itself. These falls are a terraced water drop of 40 feet. The name "Kempty" derives from "camp-tea" because British officials frequently hosted tea parties here. Although the falls are a beauty, but the crowds overpower nature! We had a warm cup of tea at one of the stalls and then took a cable car back to our parking spot. Barkot was the next destination.

We left very early to beat the crowds at Yamunotri, as the plan was to terk 9km up to meet Maa Yamunotri, the daughter of Surya and sister of Yama. This trek was the first one we would experience in our Yatra, so we were very powered up and full of enthusiasm. The trek route didn't let us down. It was really scenic. Our spirits were high and we reached the temple in good time. We did a group pooja where the spring actually emanates. It was magical to see it babble out to quench the spiritual thirst of the yatris.

Notes: We left the hotel as early as 4:00am since heavy crowds were expected. We arrived just around 6:30 am at the foot of the trek trail (Janaki Chatti). After a hot cup of tea we began the trek. This trek was a practice trek before we took on the Kedarnath trek. It was a comfortable trek, not a moderately steep gradient. The views are breathtaking. There are lot of refreshment stalls on the way if you feel like it. Washroom facilities are good. It is a 9km trek to the Yamunotri temple. You can pay your respects to Ma Yamuna and then trek back down for another 9km back to Janaki Chatti. After reaching up, took a dip in the sulphur spring at 10:30am. We did a group pooja (Rs. 1000 per couple) and even took the prasad of sulphur spring Yamunotri cooked rice back home.

Notes: At the Yamunotri temple and the surrounding areas, you'll find basic, local vegetarian food options such as dal, rice, roti, sabzi, and snacks like maggi noodles, available at small dhabas and eateries along the trek from Janki Chatti. On the way down we had Puran Poli and it was a great idea. After getting down we ate Paratha at one of the restaurants at the foot of the Yamunotri Mountain.

Early in the morning we proceeded towards Harsil via Uttarkashi (Journey Time-4hrs Distance-111km). En route we stopped at the Kashi Vishwanath temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is visited by thousands throughout the year. As the name suggests, it's considered to be the Kashi (another name for Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh). This temple holds a special place in my heart. I had visited this temple in 1999 with my mother en route our Char Dham Yatra. The poojari there had told me to come back the next year with my husband. (Fat chance I thought, I am not even thinking of one! :-) ) To my utter surprise and his too, I met the same poojari at the same temple and seated in the same place 25 years later. Just UNCANNY!!! Uttarkashi is dotted with several temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Goddess Durga, Parshuram, Dattatrya, Bhairav, Annapurna, Laksheswar, Ekadashrudra. The road to Uttarkashi had got damaged due land slides and we were stopped at a place called Bhatwari. We decided to take shelter at a small hotel called MJ Hotel. That was fun too, as it was Kojagiri Poornima on that day. After a session of Hari Path we had a dinner of Bhel and Masala milk which is the customary prasad. The MJ Hotel kitchen staff was gracious enough to entertain us as chefs in their kitchen, where we made the Bhel and milk.

Notes: This was a contingency arrangement because the road to Harsil got damaged in land slide and we were stopped at Bhatwari about 2 hours before Harsil.

This was the day we visited Gangotri. The main origin of the river is Gaumukh which is a glacier located 19 km away from Gangotri temple. Located at an altitude of 3,100mts, Gangotri Temple, the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is a peaceful white temple surrounded by Deodar and pine trees and the Greater Himalayan Range. The holy river Bhagirathi, which is one of the two head-streams of Ganga, flows alongside Gangotri Temple. The day we visited the temple, it was cold and rainy, so there was absolutely no one at the temple. We had to ask if this really was the Gangotri temple. So we had a great darshan here. Braving the chilly rain we did pooja here with the Bhagirathi streaming down yonder. It was a unique way to spend our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The evening saw heavy thundershowers, so we could not reach Neelangana Resort and camped at a low key place instead. We visited Mukhwa Village in the late afternoon, which is the winter abode of Goddess Gangotri. Since the Gangotri region becomes remote during winters due to heavy snowfall, devotees visit Mukhwa to worship the goddess. The village is home to the Bhotia tribe, who originally come from Tibet. We had an interesting session of Lalita Sahasranam chanting by the flowing Ganga at Neelangana Resort. That was a very invigorating experience.

Notes: This is a renowned Hindu temple in a Himalayan valley along the Bhagirathi River, dedicated to the goddess Ganga. When we visited we encountered rains and cold. Be prepared for all weathers in such situations. This means jackets (capable to protect down to -5 dec C), raincoats, scarf, sun cap, thick sole shoes. Account for some time to perform Poojas. Generally you would need cash to get the Pooja done. A rule for estimating the cash is about 3000 Rs per Pooja. Open from 4 AM - 2 PM and 3 PM - 9 PM on all days

Drive to Sitapur - this is a long drive of 8 hours. On the way we passed through Rudraprayag by the confluence of Alakananda and Mandakini (green in color). This was a winding drive and very uncomfortable for those prone to motion sickness. I would highly recommend keeping your stomach really light and sitting in the front seat of the vehicle to get around this discomfort.

This was the day we were all looking forward to. The Trek to Kedarnath Temple! We had prepared for this both physically and mentally, but believe me, no amount of preparation is enough! The 23km up trek was fun initially, the view magnificent and the spirits soaring. As we trudged along it started to get harder, not because of the terrain, but mostly because the trail seemed to keep on continuing forever. Where is Kedarnath Baba? Where is He? These were the only thoughts as we plodded along! And then...... all at once, you see the Temple, it is the first darshan and that is what gives you the strength to complete the last 4kms. Yes, the last 4kms!! The point from where you can only go on foot, no horses and mules allowed. And trust me, these last 4kms are absolutely unnerving!! Not because it is hard, but because it is a psychological tussle between the mind and the body. It is only the pull of the Divine that carries you forward!! We reached up there at 4:30pm. What an achievement!! After tea and snacks with the rest of the group, we headed for the evening aarti at the temple. The mesmerizing aarti went on for almost 30 mins. I had made a sankalp (a promise) to recite the Shivamahimna Stotra at Kedarnath Temple. Shrirang and me sat there in the freezing cold right in front of Kedar Baba and completed this sankalp. We then decided to take darshan and stand in the queue, we were told would take more than 2 hours..... But, guess what? There was no queue, we just ran down the darshan aisles and stood right in front of Baba. This was definitely the highlight of my experience...... Just HE and I!!!

Notes: This is a long tiring trek (23 km). We decided to walk up all the way. The ones who will be taking a helicopter journey will take it from Gaurikund( if the service is available) The Maha Abhishek Aarti is performed at 4:00 AM, and the Shayan Aarti is at 6:30 PM. Points to visit on the way to the top: - Gaurikund Temple - Bhimbali - Rambada - Bheemsheela: Infront of the temple - Adi Shakaracharya Samadhi: Just Behind the temple - Bhairavnath Temple: 500mt - Rudra Cave (populary known as Dhyan Gufa) There are water vending machines along the way. Make sure to carry shoe covers if it is raining.

We had booked our slot for the early aarti at 4:00am. This was the sparsh darshan, for which we enter the sanctum sanctorum and apply some ghee and turmeric on the Shivalinga. Here the Shivalinga has the shape of the hump of Nandi. Standing in front of the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum was a trying experience. Although we had paid and booked for the darshan there is no timeline nor order in the process. You just stand and risk getting crushed between human bodies. If you are unlucky, you may even have to brave people who are claustrophobic and want to throw up! Just keep thinking of Kedar Baba. If He wills it, you will meet Him. Our group managed to reach the Shivalinga and apply the customary turmeric and ghee on It. The moment I touched HIM, it was magical.... I completely forgot the strife at the entrance and my body was filled in bliss. It is an amazing feeling! The feel of the texture of the Shivalinga on your hand and forehead cannot be described in words, it is beyond this world. Materialistically, I can describe it as a sort of a live leathery feel almost like touching a sea creature.....something that is alive and conscious!! We came out speechless!!! We began our descent after a quick breakfast. The trek down was just as challenging as the uphill one. Believe me, it takes a lot of mental strength even if you are physically fit, to complete this trek both ways! A super fantastic and divine experience this whole Dham was!!!! Etched in my mind forever!

The travel from Kedarnath to Auli was again a long one. We did take a lot of stops to visit a lot of temples and spots in between. For me, a victim of motion sickness this road travel was very challenging, and I can almost remember each and every stone on the long winding road rather than the scenery yonder. For unfortunates like me, let me tell you.... a) Eat light snacks like laddoo or biscuits before you sit in the vehicle. b) Keep your gaze on the road (a tip from our friendly driver) c) Make sure you have a motion sickness medicine 30mins before the journey commences. I needed to take the meds twice in that long route. But, I skipped both meals (breakfast and lunch). That worked well for me, but was a battle with temptation, watching your group stuff themselves with really yummy food.

Basking in the high of Kedar Baba, we headed towards Badrinath. No trek no strife. You see the multi coloured beautiful 'pahadi' style temple of Badrinath instantly and it just inspires awe in you. We headed with great enthusiasm towards it, but we were rudely stopped by the long snaking darshan queue. Good Lord!! the sheer number of people who stand in the line calmly awaiting their turn is really mind boggling. We did too. It was meditative!! You ask me how long it took? Well, I would say you have to wait for as long as 4 times chanting of VishnuSahasranam. The crowd at the entrance is much more organised and the system is smoother as compared to Kedarnath. You can see the idol of Badrinath peacefully, without being jostled about. The poojaris there were gracious enough to touch my VishnuSahasranam chanting book to the idol's feet. We received the "amrut tirth" and left the sanctum very satisfied. The mediative Badrinath really inspires your divine self to pop right out. Makes you think about the purpose of being born a human. After the amazing darshan we visited Mana Village, which is controlled by the Indian Army. They may stop commercial vehicles a few kilometers before the village border. One needs to walk from the village gateway. "Bharath ki pehali chai ki dookan" as made famous by Modiji ; is definitely worth a visit. Places like Ganesh Gufa, Vyas Gufa, Bheem Pull, Swarga Dwar are about 3 km from here. Yes, a steep climb, but there are dozens of shops lined up along the road, so the walk is quite an enjoyable one. One can buy woolen wear at this place. The sweaters, stoles etc. are hand woven by the local villagers. The least we as tourists can do is support them by buying their merchandise. They have a lot of medicinal herbs too. Do try the one for diabetes.

Drive from Auli to Hrishikesh. This was a long one. En route we passed the famous Central Sanskrit University of Baba Ramdev. We stopped at Dhari Devi Mandir. Actually, one must visit Her temple before embarking on the Char Dham, but we chose to do it after. And, by God, we were glad we chose it so. At the Dhari Devi temple, there was a very special visitor along with us. A local Goddess with her trousseau had come to meet Dhari Devi. What a sight that was!!! Sheer delight! We saw the Visitor's Effigy tremble and shake with electrifying energy which instantly connected all present there to Dhari Devi. This too was an experience beyond speech!! We missed the Ganga aarti at Hrishikesh, but that did not puncture our bubble of happiness. Walking past the streets of Hrishikesh was quaint and fun. We saw the famous Lakshman Jhoola and walked past the Swami Shivanand Ashram.

Do's and Don'ts

Be prepared for all three weather conditions - rain, cold, sun and a combination of rain and cold. At the foot of Kedarnath you can buy shoe covers for about 150 Rs. Buy a few pairs of shoe covers. If it is raining the pathway to Yamunotri and Kedarnath tends to be wet and is often littered with horse dung which gets cleaned frequently but the cleaning effort is never enough. This causes the shoes to get dirty, slippery and cold. In such situations the shoe covers come handy.
Recommended gear for cold - thermal inner ware, light sweatshirts (at least 2), one winter jacket which can sustain down to -5 deg C, light raincoat which covers head, neck and the rest of the body together, water resistant trousers, warm scarf. Please note you may have to wear the winter ware inside the raincoat. Plan your attire such that you can add / remove clothes in layers.
Cover the ears if the temperatures drop suddenly.
The winding roads and long bus journeys (8 to 10 hours) can make some very uncomfortable. It is nest to carry medicines for motion sickness. A more conservative way to avoid motion sickness is to eliminate acidity but this may be difficult.
Walking poles are your best mate while walking up and down the mountains. You can also buy bamboo sticks at the foot of the mountains (30 Rs each). However, bamboo does not have a pointed end and that can cause a somewhat less reliable support.
Mrinal thoughtfully carried Puran Poli as a substitute for lunch/ dinner, and it came handy while climbing down Yamunotri.
Carry camphor to avoid breath trouble when the air gets rare at higher altitude. Just smell it if you start feeling heavy while breathing
On the way to Kedarnath and Yamunotri there are water vending machines. You can keep refilling empty bottles at these machines.
The public toilets are very often quite reliable, and you can count on them.
To prevent shoes from getting wet if rains, you can buy shoe covers (approx. 150 Rs each). You may need multiple pairs.
Carry extra pairs of socks.
Carry about 25,000 Rs in cash. If you suddenly need to hire a Doli or a horse, the cost can be anywhere between ₹ 5000/- Rs and ₹ 10,000/-. Also, if you wish to attend a special pooja then the payments need to be in cash.
Use good shoes with arch support. Good arch support may help prevent knee pain.

My usual suggestion - use airport lounges effectively. Good food when you need it is the value they bring.
