Before Shivaji Maharaj was imprisoned by Aurangzeb in the city of Agra, Shivaji Maharaj was forced to sign a treaty with the Mughals. This treaty was called the treaty of Purandar. Due to this treaty, he had to surrender 23 forts and the region surrounding them to the Mughals. Sinhagad was one of them.
When Aurangzeb invited Shivaji Maharaj and prince Sambhaji to Agra, it was supposed to be a diplomatic meeting between the Marathas and the Mughals. It turned out to be imprisonment and a clear act of deception. As result, after Shivaji Maharaj miraculously escaped from Agra. He still continued to pretend that he wanted to follow the clauses of the treaty of Purandar while the Marathi swaraj was recovering from the damage caused by Shivaji's absence.
