This trip didn’t begin with big expectations or a checklist of must-see places. It started with a simple desire to step away from routine and see what happens when you slow down. Some trips are planned down to the minute, while others unfold slowly, letting the places lead the way. This journey through Kerala belonged to the second kind. It wasn’t about chasing highlights or rushing from one attraction to another, but about moving at a gentler pace. Kerala felt like the right choice for that kind of travel. It’s the sort of place where journeys matter as much as destinations, where a random tea stop or a roadside snack can feel just as memorable as a viewpoint or a monument. Over these few days, the plan was loose, the pace was unhurried, and the experiences were allowed to unfold naturally—through changing landscapes, quiet moments and hearty meals.

From misty hills and forested roads to quiet backwaters and old coastal towns, this tour became less about the route we followed and more about how it made us feel along the way.

Munnar: Hills, Tea & Comfort Food - The journey began quietly near the airport with a small cup of tea, the kind that feels grounding after travel. Breakfast at a Road-side stall introduced us to the flavors of Kerala with soft 'puttu', warm and comforting, setting a relaxed pace for the days ahead. Munnar welcomed us with rolling hills wrapped in mist and stretches of green that seemed endless. Tea gardens spilled across slopes like carefully painted landscapes, and the air felt cooler, lighter. Lunch was simple, allowing the surroundings to take Centre stage. As evening settled in, Prakrithi became our dinner stop, where Kerala parottas and robust Chettinad flavors paired well with the mountain chill. Later, wandering through Market Road, the smell of frying 'bhajjis' drifted through the air, drawing us to a small stall where the snacks were crisp, hot, and perfect for the cold evening.

Munnar Day Two: Tea Trails & National Parks - The second day in Munnar started with breakfast at the hotel before heading out to explore tea estates and nearby attractions. At the tea factory, a cup of masala tea cost ?40 and tasted average at best. One important thing to note is that digital payments like Google Pay were not accepted—only cash or card. Sightseeing included stops at Mattupetty, Echo Point, and Eravikulam National Park, all connected by a scenic bus ride. Lunch that day was at Rochas, where we gobbled down some Al faham, Beef roast, Kerala parotta, followed by a quiet dinner back in the room.

Thekkady: Wildlife, Culture & Spices - The drive to Thekkady was long and bumpy but filled with greenery. We stopped midway for a washroom break and refreshments, where we tried yellow coconut priced at ?70 each. We also bought achappam in both sweet and savoury versions, which turned out to be one of the most enjoyable snacks of the trip and is highly recommended. Upon reaching Thekkady, we explored elephant ride and jungle safari options, though the enquiries felt overpriced, with safari timings quoted at three to four hours. At Periyar National Reserve, we kept it simple with sandwiches. In the evening, we attended a Kalaripayattu martial arts performance at Mudra Art Centre, with tickets priced at ?300. The show was decent but did not stand out, especially compared to similar performances in Munnar. Dinner was at Thekkady Café, located beside the Mudra Art Centre. Veg options were limited, but we ordered Malabar chicken with parotta and Kerala veg biryani, which were satisfying. Before leaving Thekkady, we shopped for spices and banana chips, which are almost mandatory purchases here.

Alleppey: A Scenic Surprise - The journey from Thekkady to Alleppey turned out to be unexpectedly beautiful. The tea plantations along the route looked even better than those in Munnar. We stopped at a bakery for pineapple juice and puddings, which also had clean washrooms, making it a convenient break. Lunch was at Hotel Arya, where we had a simple Kerala-style vegetarian meal that was comforting and filling. Alleppey brought a noticeable change in pace. We took a private backwater boat ride that cost ?2,000, with ?1,000 charged per hour. It was peaceful, but pricing is something to be cautious about. A brief stop for photographs with a kite—often mistaken for an eagle—cost ?20. The afternoon was reserved for rest, followed by a visit to the beach around five or six in the evening. Kulukki sarbat from a local vendor was refreshing and perfect for the coastal weather. Dinner in Alleppey was one of the highlights of the entire trip. At Brothers Since 1973, we ordered veg stew, beef roast, Kerala parotta, and mutton chips. The total bill came to around ?700–800. The portions were generous, the flavours were excellent, and the pricing felt fair, making it one of the most satisfying meals of the journey.

Kochi: History, Water Metro & Tourist Lanes - After breakfast at the hotel, we headed toward Kochi, spending time in the Fort Kochi area. The beach near the naval base was just a short drive away. We also used the water metro service from Fort Kochi to the High Court area, which runs approximately every twenty-five minutes and offers a pleasant way to travel. We visited a church that appeared structurally depressed and later explored the Dutch Museum, where entry cost only ?5 and was worth it. The synagogue area was visually stunning, with a beautiful lane lined on both sides by shops selling handicrafts, antiques, coins, stamps, paintings, clothes, and souvenirs. The area had a very touristy, Goa-like, hippie vibe, though prices were noticeably high. Lunch was at Hotel Kamath, a road-side restaurant which looked old and worn-out but was one of the only vegetarian options in the area. However, it served its purpose. We checked in at Hotel Broad Bean later that day and had dinner at the hotel.
