Visit to Rameswaram Temple and Meenakshi Amman Temple (Madurai)

This is my travelogue of our trip to Madurai, Rameswaram. It was a 4 day long family Trip. For us, June 2024 was the most suitable time although the best time to visit this area is Jan, Feb, June, July. In this trip, we visited two temples - Rameswaram and Meenakshi Amman Temple. This itinerary provides detailed information about the places we visited and the necessary logistics related information. Notes: Generally the entry to the temple happens through the East gate and exit through North gate. This means that footwear is left at East gate and you need to walk from North gate to East gate bare foot to collect it. This is an interesting walk of about 10 minutes. The road may not be dry and clean. However this short walk shows you different levels of faith that the devotees come with. |

Do's and Don'ts
Meenakshi Amman Temple
- Best time to reach Meenakshi Amman temple is 6:15 am.
- Do hire a guide who can show you the masterpieces of art in the temple.
- Entry is through the North gate and exit through the East gate. One can easily walk from the East gate to North around the temple.
- Lockers are available to keep your belongings like mobile phones.
- There are hundreds of shops around the temple complex. But the goods sold here are generally poor value for money.
- Don't buy silk items in this area. Consult the driver of your car. He is far more likely to take you to a better place for shopping.
- Book online entry tickets which gives you entry to the innermost point possible and saves a lot of time.
- Entry is through the East gate and exit through the North gate. You will need to walk back to the East gate to collect your footwear. You could also take the electric rikshaws if you prefer not to walk.
- This area is always crowded and one should beware of pickpocketers
- Agni-Teertham is very close to the East gate of Rameswaram temple.
- Don't go by the pictures of hotels in Rameswaram on internet. These hotels can be quite disappointing. If you have a vehicle at your disposal then you can still stay little away from the temple and choose a better quality hotel.
- Book entry tickets online which gives you entry to the innermost point possible and saves a lot of time.
- If you have limited time at hand, it is best to hire a car (with chauffer) which is always at your disposal. Better to have a full size car than a mid size car. The air conditioning of a bigger tends to work better and more comfortable especially in hot and humid weather.
- There are plenty of fruit sellers in this area. It is fairly safe to eat the cut fruit on the streets.
- Have 10Rs or 20 Rs notes handy. This change comes handy at temples to give away.
