Pune Khajoraho Motorcycle riding trip

After many years, the travel bug bit me again and I started to explore the options  . Ted Simon, who circled the world twice on a motorbike, says - “In spite of wars and tourism and pictures by satellite, the world is just the same size it ever was”. It is dauntingly inspiring to think how much of it I may never see. It is no trick to go around the world these days; you can pay a lot of money and fly around it nonstop in less than forty-eight hours, but to know it, to smell it and feel it between your toes you have to crawl. There is no other way. Not flying, not floating. You have to stay on the ground and swallow the bugs as you go. Then the world is immense. The best you can do is trace your long, infinitesimally thin line through the dust and extrapolate. I drew the longest line I possibly could, that could still be seen as following a course.”. These lines really haunted me, and I started thinking about a motorcycle trip. I know some might say it’s pointless. But for some, it is about how much can an individual endure and push human limits. It’s as simple as making choices that define how we live and tell our stories. On a timeline, it can either be an ordinary straight line, or an eventful journey, full of experiences. It is an individual’s choice of how they like their life graph to look like. I shared my thought with my friend Santosh and he liked the idea. We felt we owed it to ourselves to do something big enough, a memorable trip that we could look back to and question the sanity of in more mature years to come.

Alright, so this is what I wish to call the philosophy behind why we decided to go on this trip  . We decided to take one week off and finalized dates as 16th November 2019 to 24th November 2019 and started our planning accordingly. Since, we both had never been to Madhya Pradesh, we zeroed down on Khajuraho as our destination. After a lot of discussions, we decided to take first halt in Indore and booked a hotel. The rest of the trip was left mostly unplanned. So, didn’t book any other hotels.
Hotel bookings were in place now (really? We needed only one  ). Since, this was the first real long ride for me, I decided to pamper myself by purchasing a few good riding gears. I searched online and in local stores, and finally found one good local store. To my surprise, there were not too many good online options. I purchased Level 2 bike jacket, DOT and ECE marked helmet, good quality mobile holder and bungie ropes. Oh yeah and one pair of boots as well (lot of pampering, isn’t it  ).

Okay, so all was set, and we were waiting for that day. Finally, The Day was a day away. This one was the longest ride I had ever planned (the one longest so far, was Pune to Goa – about 600 km). Therefore, it was a mix feeling; I was little nervous and at the same time excited for all the fun that I will be having. Like a child, that night I couldn’t sleep well because of eagerness and excitement.

In case of questions, feel free to write to me.

The distance from Pune to Indore is over 600 km. We decided to start as early as we c. At one point of time we even considered to start at mid-night (too much excitement ????). But we tried to be realistic and finally decided to start at 5am. On that day, we realized that even that was little optimistic. Finally, we started at 6:30 am. Google shows two routes for Pune to Indore. We decided to go via Nashik. Morning was very pleasant, and though I could not sleep very well earlier night, I was feeling very energetic and excited. We travelled approximately 100kms and took our first break for a breakfast. After breakfast, we took few small breaks and our next long break was for a lunch. At around 2pm we took lunch in a dhaba near Malegaon. We took break for around one and half hour though we were not much tired. After this, we took small breaks of 5-10 mis after every 60-70 kms. At around 5:15 pm we stopped at road side tea stall. It was a perfect timing as sun was setting on the horizon and we had steaming tea cups in our hands. There's something about a beautiful sunset that makes the travel experience complete. This reminded me following lines which I had read somewhere. “Age is irrelevant. Ask me how many sunsets I’ve seen, hearts I’ve loved, trips I’ve taken. That’s how old I am.” It started getting darker after this. We had already crossed Maharashtra border and we were in Madhya Pradesh on NH52. I must say that roads in MP are very nice. This is 6 lane highway without much traffic, so our further journey was less tiring. We reached Indore at 10:00 pm. We had booked hotel in Vijay Nagar colony. This is one of the good localities in Indore. Our check out was seamless but we were disappointed with the rooms. Bed linens were not clean, and bathrooms needed serious renovations. By now I was feeling sleepy rather than tired. We took dinner in the hotel restaurant and went to bed by 11:30pm. We travelled around 600+ kms today. Initially, we were suspicious as this is the first time, we were traveling 600 kms in one day. Though it was mentally and physically challenging, we could complete it successfully as per our schedule.

As per our initial plan, we were supposed to stay the day in Indore to take rest. But, after sound sleep, we woke up refreshed and decided to proceed to Sanchi. It is around 240 kms from Indore. It is Indore-Kanpur-Sanchi route and road condition was very good. It was a pleasant ride. We started at around 11 am and stopped at a roadside place for breakfast. We had Indori Pohe for breakfast. This was the first time I tasted Indori Pohe. Pohe is made in multiple states of India and these variants have slight differences. Today, we were feeling relaxed as we had to travel relatively less distance. After few breaks and an hour of lunch break, we reached Sanchi by around 4:30 pm. Initially, we were thinking of staying in Sagar which is relatively bigger town and very close to Sanchi. But we couldn’t find any good hotel online in Sagar. So, we decided to search hotels along the route. Sanchi is very small town and there are very few good hotels. While searching hotels in Sanchi we came across Gateway Retreat hotel owned by MP tourism. We were in love of this hotel immediately after entering their campus. Though this is owned by government, it is well maintained. Also, location is an even bigger temptation when it comes to drive to Sanchi Stupas (just 1.5 kms). This hotel offers a wide range of accommodation from dormitories to AC suits. Beautifully maintained lawn and calm faced Buddha welcomes you when you enter. Rooms were neat and clean – very important! We decided to visit stupas immediately after checking in. It was 5 pm by the time we checked in. After enquiry, we came to know that visiting hours for Stupa are from sunrise to sunset. Thus, timings vary according to a season. Since, it was a winter, visiting hours were from 7 am to 5:30 pm. So, we decided to visit next day early morning and retired for the day. We were planning to travel to Khajuraho the day after and were back to searching hotels once again. Considering our experience with this hotel, we again looked for another MP tourism hotel and found a place called Zhankar. Overall, this was very relaxing day.

We woke up early and visited stupas. This site is located on a small hill. Sun was about to rise and it was very pleasant. We could hear birds chirping and saw a lot of peacocks around. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Stupas of Sanchi were constructed on the orders of Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE to preserve and spread the Buddhist philosophy. The oldest, and also the largest monument, is the Great Stupa also called Stupa No. 1, initially built under the Mauryas, and adorned with one of the Pillars of Ashoka. During the following centuries, especially under the Shungas and the Satavahanas, the Great Stupa was enlarged and decorated with gates and railings, and smaller stupas were also built in the vicinity, especially Stupa No.2, and Stupa No.3. We spent around 2 hrs there and returned to hotel. After breakfast at the hotel restaurant we started for Khajuraho at around 11:30 am. We travelled 330 kms and reached Khajuraho at around 9:15 pm. It took longer than expected. Few patches of a road were very bad. Last few kilometres were worse. The road was under construction and was simply not to be found in some places. It was already dark; the ride was tough and tiring. We were tested physically and mentally. Once again, hotel Zankar was one more pleasant experience by MP tourism. The rooms were very nice, and staff was polite. After a refreshing shower, we went for a dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Notes: Book a Government approved guide to visit the Khajuraho monument the next day. These guides can be more expensive than the the non approved guides, but this premium is worth it.

After a tiring ride the previous day, we slept like dead logs. We woke up refreshed again. As per the hotel manger’s suggestion, we had booked government approved guide last night (government approved guides are more expensive, but you get authentic information as they are well trained by the government). By the time we finished the breakfast, our guide was waiting for us in the lobby. The temples are divided into three complexes-the Western, the Eastern and the Southern. They are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We started with Western group of temples. This is the most famous and is beautifully maintained group. I was amazed to see these temples as soon as I entered the campus. A bit of a history of this place – built between 950 AD and 1050 AD by the rulers of the Chandela Dynasty, the Khajuraho Temples are a cluster of 85 Hindu and Jain temples, out of which only 25 are still surviving. These temples are intricately and beautifully embellished and decorated with sculpture and art. Carved from hard river sandstone, one of the main allures of these walls is erotic art. But this world-famous erotic art constitutes only 10% of the total sculptures of Khajuraho. The artwork symbolically highlights the four goals of life considered necessary and proper in Hinduism - Dharma, Kama, Artha and moksha. These sculptures are not chiselled but are mobile and liquid, representing the people who exult in the joy of living, with all its fascinating variety. In fact, there is hardly any other place like Khajuraho where sculptures portray all kinds of human emotions with such a great excellence. We visited all temple groups and returned to the hotel by 2 pm. There is so much to see. The time we spent in the temples, was just not enough. So, we decided to visit western group again in the evening. We reached at around 5 pm. Like Sanchi, these temples too open at sunrise and close at sunset. So, here also timings change according to a season. We entered the campus just before sunset. The twilight made temples even more beautiful. This experience was beyond words. Let the pictures do the talking. After visiting temples, we spent some time in the town doing window shopping and then returned to the hotel. We spent rest of the evening relaxing in the hotel. We stayed at Udaygiri MP tourism Jungle resort for our next day stay.

Most of this day was spent traveling. After visiting Khajuraho historic moUdaygiri and Sanchi are close to each other and we had to take same route on our return. Considering the previous experience and to avoid night ride, we wanted to start early. We had to again travel around 300+ km. But we woke up late and after breakfast we started at around 12 noon ????. The return journey began; so far so good. We had travelled around 1200km so far and we were thoroughly enjoying every moment. Today, it was a bit easy as we had to ride on bad patches of the road during the day time. For Udaygiri, we took a diversion before Sanchi. As name of the hotel suggests, Jungle Resort was situated in the reserve forest. So, location was remote. Last few kilometres were very tough. Road was very narrow, lonely and on top of this, we lost mobile signals. Now we were on our own without google map ???? Good part was that there were couple of direction signs for the resort. For a few kilometres we had to travel through jungle. At one point, road was full of water and we were not sure how deep it could be, though you could tell that it was shallow enough to ride through. We had no choice but to go through that. While riding through it, more than half of my motorbike got immersed in the water. My shoes and jeans were completely drenched, and I was dead scared ?. Finally, we reached the resort at around 9pm. Rooms were small, though neat and clean. We were very tired. We had dinner at the resort and hit the bed couldn’t think any further – not even to book a hotel for the next day’s stay ????nument, return journey began.

Today, I woke up bit early. Santosh had tooth ache last night and so he could not sleep very well. Therefore, he wanted to sleep for some more time. I decided to take a stroll around. In the morning I could see how beautiful the location was. Surrounded by trees from all sides and located at a bank of the river, this location can be the only reason to visit this place. I went to the river and what a breath-taking view was! I could see peacocks flying from one bank to another. This was the first time in my life I saw so many peacocks flying. I think, they look more beautiful when they fly as their wings look golden in the morning sun light. After spending some time, I came back to our room and started to get ready. By now, Santosh was feeling better. We took the breakfast in the hotel restaurant and started to search hotels for today’s night stay. Our next destination was Ujjain. By now, we had complete faith in the MP tourism hotels and our obvious choice was to MP tourism hotels. We booked Ujjaini hotel which is conveniently located from Mahakal temple. After hotel booking, we spent some time taking pictures. It is so relaxing to spend time in jungle that we wanted to spend some more time. But our next destination was calling us. Much against our wish, we started at around 12 noon ?. Today, travel was only 240 km and road were good. So, we were bit relaxed and could maintain average speed of 80km/hr. After a few breaks, we reached Ujjain at 6:30 pm. We checked in to the hotel, took shower and went to Mahakal temple. Temple was around 3-4 km away from our hotel. So, we decided to take walk. It was the straight road to the temple. It was quite easy to locate the temple. There was not much rush in the temple and within 45 mins we were out. There are a lot of vegetarian restaurants around the temple. We went to the restaurant which one of our friends had suggested. Generally speaking, don’t expect to get good south Indian food if you are travelling in the northern part of India. Still I was tempted, and I decided to try south Indian food. As expected, my decision went totally wrong ?. The next day we had to travel only 60 km to reach Indore. We took it easy for the rest of the day. After coming back to hotel rooms, we watched tv for some time and went to a bed.

It was a lazy morning. Today’s plan was to travel to Indore and to spend rest of the day there. Indore is around 60 kms from Ujjain and so it was almost rest day. We got up little late and ordered breakfast in our rooms. After breakfast, we rode for around 1 hr and reached Indore at around 1 pm. Khau Gally was our main attraction for the Indore. So, we had booked our hotel close to Khau Galli. We devoted the afternoon to the art of doing nothing in our rooms ???? and then visited most famous Khau Galli in the evening. We reached there at around 5pm. It is located just in the heart of the city – close to the Indore palace and the famous cloth market of Indore. This is a very crowded area with a lot of narrow lanes. It is difficult to find even a two-wheeler parking. After some research we could find corporation parking slot which was just opposite to palace. We first visited palace temple. It has a collection of some beautiful idols of gods and goddesses. After spending some time in the temple, we went to purchase sarees and dress material for our better halves (we wanted to gift something to our better halves for the big heartedness they had shown by allowing us for this ride ????). This famous lady’s dress material and saree market is near Sheetala Devi temple. After shopping, we went to Sarafa Bazaar (khau galli), which is adjacent to this market. This is one narrow lane and as name suggests it is having jewellery shops. After the day’s business, the shops close and this lane turns into famous khau galli. We reached there at around 8:30 pm. Since this lane is so narrow and crowded, we were not sure how this will turn into khau gally. We were very curious to see how this transformation really happens! At around 9 pm, carts started coming in and it got busy with these kart sellers. By 9:30 pm all the stalls/carts had settled and were ready for their business. Within half an hour it was a totally different world. It became very lively with foodies crowding to binge . You see so many varieties of food that one cannot even taste them all. I think better way is to go in a group of 5-6 and share each food item. This way at least you can taste them all. Though we were just 2, we tried coconut kachori, dahi wada, shahi shikanji, pani puri, coconut squash. It was so tempting that we wanted to try everything. But our stomachs couldn’t cooperate beyond a point ?. We spent around 2 hrs and then returned to the hotel rooms.

Today, the initial plan was to travel from Indore to Nashik and take a halt. But we were not feeling exhausted at all. So, we decided to travel to Pune without a halt. We both got up refreshed. We had packed our back packs and had kept them ready the previous night only to save some time in the morning. At around 8 am, we were ready to go. By now our bodies were tuned and we were having better control over our machines ( this was our first long distance ride, remember). Therefore, today we were doing much better than our first day. We were not very hungry. So, we rode for few hours and took our first halt for a breakfast. By afternoon we entered in the Maharashtra. Our route was via Nashik. But this time google map took us by different route. It was narrow and lonely road going through small villages but was very scenic. We skipped lunch and couldn’t find good restaurant on this route. At around 4 pm we went into descent looking restaurant. But, they had only chat items on their menu. Since, we didn’t have much of an option, I ordered ragada patice and ended lunch with 2 lassis. By the time we started again, sun started to set. We were riding through grape and corn fields. Twilight made them look very beautiful. Ride till Narayangaon was smooth. But real trouble started after Narayangaon. Most of the road beyond this point is narrow and very busy with heavy vehicles – primarily buses and trucks. As it was getting dark, all the vehicles were flaunting their headlights and to prove their might. This can be a truly blinding experience for a rider – very tiring. We were just 100 km away from our homes. We could feel the excitement to get back home. Without any halt we directly stopped at Bhosari at around 10 pm. At this point, Santosh and I had to part ways. My tacho reading was showing around 2400 km. Together, in 8 days we travelled through 2 states and covered 2400 plus kilometres. Completing a long-distance ride was an empowering feeling of accomplishment. It was fulfilling experience. It is well said that sometimes a person has to leave their comfort zone in order to find out who they are and what they are capable of. We start with were a bit scepticism in our minds about the success as this was our first long ride. But the passion showed the way. After all, “IT’S ALL IN THE MIND!” ????.
