Kinderüberraschung

Just the mere mention of this word brings back sweet memories. Way back when I was working on a project in Germany, one of my very dear friends introduced me to this very interesting world of miniature surprises.

This egg was very popular not only with kids but even adults showed an interest in it. The thin chocolate egg case envelopes a small, yellow plastic capsule - the yolk - so to say. And this yolk has all the interest concentrated in it. Here is where a tiny toy sits. And the toy that fits in comes with assembly instructions! These toys are about 2 to 2.5 inches tall and the width can even be as much as 3 inches. They are made to fit snugly in the plastic yolk, and then you experience the sheer joy of assembling this toy (mind you some of them are working models of cars) after you have had your chocolate. The assembling of these toys was without any tools, they just snap-fitted.

The best part of this überraschung   was that, it used to cost only 1 DM/- (which costs 1 Euro now a days). How cool is that?  So, every time I went grocery shopping, I ended up buying 2 of these eggs. And just imagine I lived there for more than 2 years!!! My collection was really huge then. Later, I learnt that I was not the only adult who was interested in these eggs. People at work actually got their collections to show each other. In fact they exchanged duplicates. So I joined their gang.  There were a series of these toys that went on to be popular and coveted. There were “limited” editions and festival editions, metal figurines, hand painted single figures and jigsaw puzzles. There were barnyard animals, Egyptian figures, pre historic series, magician series, metal soldiers and I don’t know just too many interesting ideas. It quite got to be a hobby with me really.

There were controversies about the toy being too small and could be swallowed by kids. So this exceptionally enjoyable sweet/gizmo was banned in the US and UK. Well, too bad for them I would say. The version that we get in some countries, is nowhere close to the ones I have seen in Germany. The chocolate has wax coating hence caused a furore there as well.  My daughter did not get interested in it and I don’t blame her. But, when I showed her my collection, she was quite impressed and realized why I keep saying, “Old is gold”.
